Технические и др. специальные К. местного значения готовят высококвалифицированных рабочих, мастеров и техников. Более высокую квалификацию дают региональные технические К. К числу высших учебных заведений относятся только зональные технические К., технические К. повышенного типа и национальные К. Инженеров высшей квалификации готовят К., входящие в состав университетов (в первую очередь Имперский К. наук и технологии Лондонского университета (См. Лондонский университет)). Педагогические К. готовят учителей начальных и средних школ. Для поступления в педагогический К. требуется окончание средней грамматической школы (См. Грамматические школы).

По традиции К. называются и отдельные старинные привилегированные средние школы (Итон, Уинчестер), по своему типу ничем не отличающиеся от других Паблик скулз, и некоторые частные учебные заведения, малодоступные детям трудящихся из-за высокой платы за обучение.

В США первые К. возникли в 17 в. (по образцу английских) как высшие учебные заведения, готовившие священнослужителей и государственных служащих. На основе наиболее крупных К. путём присоединения к ним медицинских, юридических, богословских школ (или факультетов) в 1-й половине 19 в. были созданы первые университеты. К. - наиболее распространённый тип высшего учебного заведения, причём одни из них являются составной частью университетов, а другие существуют как самостоятельные учебные заведения. В состав каждого университета входит, по меньшей мере, один К. гуманитарных и естественных наук, прохождение 1-3 курсов или окончание которого даёт право поступать на один из факультетов университета. Во многих К., кроме общеобразовательной подготовки, можно получить и специальность.

Технические К. готовят инженеров, учительские - учителей элементарных и средних школ.

К. с земельным наделом организованы в каждом штате с целью распространения знаний главным образом в области сельскохозяйственных наук и технических специальностей. При К. имеются опытные станции для проведения исследовательской работы.

В США имеется также большое количество 2-летних младших К., предназначенных преимущественно для усовершенствования общеобразовательной подготовки и фактически являющихся повышенными средними школами. В этих К. можно получить подготовку к некоторым специальностям, не требующим (в США) высшего образования (например, к библиотечной работе). Имеются также младшие технические К., выпускающие техников. Обучение в К. платное, в частных плата значительно выше.
